Diagnosis and Mapping of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is an enigmatic disease. This disease is usually diagnosed very late. Most women suffer for years as a result of this disease before the diagnosis is made. The most likely cause for the disease is the migration of the lining of the womb from the uterine cavity through the tubes into the pelvic cavity. These lining cells in the pelvis, cause inflammation, adhesion, pain and infertility over time.

The best and least invasive method of diagnosing endometriosis is by performing a transvaginal ultrasound scan by someone who is very experienced and has expertise in this specialised field. In transvaginal ultrasound scan, doctor would be able to diagnose endometriosis within the wall of the womb (adenomyosis), into the wall of the large bowels, into the pelvic sidewalls and urinary bladder. It is also possible to assess the presence of pelvic adhesion including adhesion of the ovaries and the bowels to the uterus and the surrounding organs. The severity of this disease is from mild to severe. Often times, the severity of the disease is correlated with the possibility of infertility.

In trans-vaginal ultrasound scan it is possible to assess the presence of the endometriotic cysts in the ovaries, involvement of the bowels by endometriosis, adhesion of the bowels to the uterus and ovaries, involvement of urinary bladder and presence of the endometriosis within the wall of the wombs (Adenomyosis).
