Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs in one or both ovaries. In fact, the function of the ovaries is to make a cyst (follicle) each month and then to realise the fluid along with the egg in the middle of cycles (Ovulation). Therefore, it common for most cysts of the ovaries to be “functional” and over the next few weeks they disappear spontaneously. However, there are some other types of cysts in ovaries which are not functional. Most of the cysts are benign including endometrioma, dermoid cyst or cystadenomas. Some cysts can be malignant which needs immediate diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosis of type of ovarian cysts is much dependent on the expertise of the doctor performing ultrasound scan.
