Uterine Anomalies

Normally the shape of the uterus is like a pear, more importantly is the shape of the cavity of the womb which is triangular. The shape of the uterus and it cavity is formed when a lady is a foetus inside her mother’s uterus. Therefore, any shape of the uterus is congenital, fixed and will not change after the birth of a baby girl. A little bit of the deviation from the normality can be considered a normal variant; for example, some heart-shaped cavity of the uterus can be considered a normal variant. The prevalence of uterine malformations is less than 5% in population in general population. Some forms of the malformations are amenable to surgery and some forms are not. If the cavity of the uterus becomes less than a normal uterus, there is an increased risk of preterm labour. In most cases of uterine malformations there is no problem with getting pregnant and having a normal pregnancy and delivery. The diagnosis of uterine malformation is best made by three-dimensional trans-vaginal ultrasound scan.
